SQUID THE CLEANER

Serving as a pillar of Squid's live set's over the last year, it was only a matter of time before we'd be able to hear 'The Cleaner' is all its recorded glory. As with all Speedy Wunderground releases Dan Carey's masterful production makes for a truly immersive listen as the 7 and a half minute epic twists and turns through a maze of sonic nooks and crannies. Compressed krautrock beats perpetually push forward as zany, 80s-inspired synth sounds blurt through gaps in singer/drummer Ollie Judge's vocal breaks. Shining a light on guitarist Louis Borlase, 'The Cleaner' is something of a duet building around the suggestive refrain "So I can dance". Furthermore, if you're familiar with Speedy Wundergound then you'll probably know that they're suckers for breaking their own rules. Arriving alongside 'The Cleaner', yesterday came the announcement of the label's first ever EP release in the form of Squid's Town Centre. Due out on the 6th of September, it's sure to be a good'un. -Holly Mullineaux
